What are the Different Levels of CertainTeed Certifications?

If you’ve already started looking at a couple of different roofing companies, you are probably also looking for ways to differentiate them from each other.

One way to do this is by checking their credentials and certifications that they have been given by roofing manufacturers.

Most shingle manufacturers offer some kind of certification program for roofing companies to test their knowledge and procedures, and show potential customers that they know what they are doing.

But how do you know what these badges mean, and how do they help you know the difference between contractors?

In this blog, we’ll talk all about the credentials offered by CertainTeed, one of the nation’s largest manufacturer of roofing materials.

Who/What is CertainTeed?

Founded in 1904 as the General Roofing Manufacturing Company, CertainTeed has become one of North America’s largest manufacturers of roofing, siding, and other building materials since its name change in 1917. The company, headquartered just outside of Philadelphia, PA, is now owned by Saint-Gobain, a French corporation that is parent to CertainTeed and several other production and distribution companies across the globe.

What certifications does CertainTeed offer?

Master Shingle Applicator for Individuals

For an individual roof installer, CertainTeed has a Master Shingle Applicator (MSA) test that when passed, provides the individual with the Master Shingle Applicator title. That means that an installer has been trained in the correct techniques and procedures for how to install CertainTeed’s shingles.

The course also teaches general knowledge about workmanship, roof systems, flashing, ventilation, and roof cost estimates.  Roofing contractors will often have their workforce complete this course to ensure that everyone has the same level of training for installation.

ShingleMaster Credentials for Residential Contractors

For residential roofing contractors, CertainTeed offers two tiers of qualifications, ShingleMaster (SM), and SELECT ShingleMaster (SSM). To earn ShingleMaster status, a company must employ someone who is registered as a Master Shingle Applicator, and complete a ShingleMaster Credential Course through their local CertainTeed representative. The benefits of being a ShingleMaster are being backed by CertainTeed, and the ability to sell CertainTeed’s SureStart PLUS extended warranty.

To be a SELECT ShingleMaster, there are a few more hoops for contractors to jump through. First, the company must have been in business for at least five years, or a ShingleMaster for 1 year. Then, 50% of the installation crew and all supervisors must be Master Shingle Applicators. The company must also have a Shingle Quality Specialist on staff, pass a fiscal responsibility exam, and have insurance for workers compensation and roofing liability.

It takes a good bit of work to achieve that SSM status, and for those efforts, companies will be able to have the badge on their website, along with the benefits that ShingleMaster companies receive.

Gold & Silver Stars for Commercial Contractors

If you’re a commercial-only roofing contractor, you won’t be able to get a ShingleMaster credential, but you will be able to earn Silver Star Contractor or Gold Star Contractor status. Silver Star Contractors must carry the proper insurance policies, been in business for more than three years, and have their credit history examined by CertainTeed.

For Gold Star status, companies have to meet all of those criteria, but must have been in business for 5 years, and have had three projects inspected by CertainTeed.
